# Technology
Made with {{< icon icon="heart" color="red" >}} & [Hugo](https://gohugo.io/). I now use a self-hosted Gitea and NGINX instance.
Previously built with [Jekyll](https://jekyllrb.com). Previously hosted by [GitHub Pages](https://pages.github.com/).

# Static Sites
I like static sites for much the same reasons as other people but in particular, that they are content first and very open to if not built around the idea that your content is in version control. The reason I've moved here rather than continuing to use Medium is that I want to control my content, even if exposure and interaction will be more difficult.
These days I spend a lot more time faffing with build systems and the like but its all useful experience I suppose!

<p>I taught myself Java at about the age of thirteen, which I consider proof of what a truly wonderful resource the Internet can be. It probably also speaks to a certain ability I have for self-motivated learning, which I find to be as effective as formal tuition. I am however looking at formal tution as a way to reinforce and develop my understanding of core programming concepts. In the meantime, I am expanding my knowledge into Python through development of Django-based webapps. I am looking to develop skills in C++ or similar next, likely through games development.</p>

<p><strong>R.I.G.S</strong> or <strong>Rig Information Gathering System</strong> is Django-based webapp handling events management for TEC PA & Lighting. I have taken over project managaging and developing this project from <a href="www.codedinternet.com">Tom Price</a> and <a href="https://dtaylor.uk/">David Taylor</a>, working alongside <a href="https://github.com/mattysmith22">Matt Smith</a>. Together we have updated to Django 3.0, implemented a long awaited asset management system, rewritten the testing suite for the project and generally refactoring what is, in the main, five year old code.</p>

<p>TEC PA & Lighting must maintain something of a 'dual-headed' image - it needs to appear professional to potential clients, but approachable to potential student recruits. This single-page website was my first step towards providing an 'alternate' web presence for TEC that is student rather than client focused. It is also built using Jekyll, purely to make updating the site's content independent of its layout and more accessible to less technical, in the programming sense, persons.</p>

# 2020-12:
Back home for the holidays, missing my computing power and my soldering station. I'm writing an essay on triumphalism as a form of pathophobia, and working on a new and intresting project involving WebRTC and Django. Still wanting to work more on this site...
# ~~2020-07~~:
~~COVID bloody COVID. With no work to do for the forseeable future I am doing a lot of programming, a lot of work on this website and other selfhosting projects, and looking at bashing together a more ergonomic keyboard, because my hands are getting increasingly grumpy with straight days spent typing.~~
# ~~2019-09~~:
~~I'm about to go into second year of Philosophy at University of Nottingham. Most of my spare time is spent running recruitment and social media for [TEC PA & Lighting](https://www.nottinghamtec.co.uk). I want to get back into fiction writing and programming soon. And work more on this website.~~

<h1>Background</h1>
<p>At first, I tried to be an actor. But I quickly realised I much preferred to be behind the stage than on it. One of my first roles was as a <em>tentacle operator</em> in a production of Return to the Forbidden Planet and from then on I was hooked.</p>
<h1><a href="https://nottinghamtec.co.uk">TEC PA & Lighting</a></h1>
<p>I didn't pick the University of Nottingham <em>because</em> it has the best (opinion) and oldest (fact) technical event services student group in the entire country, but I am *supremely* glad I did. TEC has been utterly brilliant for my personal development, and I've made many friends along the way. From the moment I joined I knew I'd found something special, and threw myself into it wholeheartedly. I spent more than a year as it's Communications Officer, managing our social media and assisting other committee members with whatever they needed. I ran a successful #30DaysOfTEC visibility campaign in the days leading up to our last recruitment cycle.
<br>
2020 and COVID-19 have brought an unprecedented halt to TEC activities, just as I was elected Technical Director and thrust in charge of the whole organisation. Managing the response to a once-in-a-lifetime event is another huge opportunity for personal growth and development of skills. I have a strong vision for the organisation and its future, but I know implementing it will be challenging. I just hope that we get a chance to do some more events during my tenure as Technical Director.
</p>
<h1>Freelance Work</h1>
<p>I have branched out into freelance work using the skills and experience I have gained through TEC. I often work for College Street, which is Nottingham City Council's technical services department, including at the Nottingham Arts Theatre as a lighting technician.</p>

I am...
## Short Answer
Frenetic
## Long Answer
Frenetic. I like that word. Not entirely positive, but not entirely negative either. Definetely implying chaos - something I wield to *get things done*. That...actually, is a pretty good summary of how I do. Not what I do, but how I do it - chaotic process with undeniable results. Something like that, anyway.
I've always found the question of what I do and who I am a difficult one because the answer is at once so simple and so complicated. I do so many things. I write - both prose and code. I make, both digital and physical. I am an occasional philospher. But maybe all those things aren't as different as they seem every day - there's a common thread of creativity (chaos) running throug them all. I am a Maker in the broadest, most DIY/Hacker sense of the term and damn proud of it I am too.

<h1>Background</h1>
<p>By all accounts, I have been an utterly voracious reader since I was able to read. This is translating into a growing love for writing, both fiction and non-fiction. My writing hero is Terry Pratchett - I hardly dare hope that my writing might one day might make people think with something approaching his level of wit and incisiveness. His work has had a huge impact on me personally, and reinforced my belief in the power of words.</p>

<h1>Fiction</h1>
<p>I have an ongoing love/hate relationship with National Novel Writing Month. I am yet to produce anything publishable from my efforts, but that is the eventual goal. I also dabble in short story writing. Sometimes even poetry if things go really wrong.</p>
<h1>Non-Fiction</h1>
<p>Frentic Scribblings is the name I have settled on (for now) for my blog, which hosts anything and everything from philosophy to poetry. I write about life, in all its forms, and about my experiences. I find writing a hugely cathartic process.</p>
